Knights of the Inner Temple

October 2009

Maris Interiors has been appointed by The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple to carry out the refurbishment of 1 and 2 Harcourt and 1 Temple off Middle Temple Lane. The Inn has over 8,000 qualified members, including Judges, Barristers (both practising and non-practising) and Pupils. Each year approximately 450 students apply to join the Inner Temple with the intention of training for the Bar. Works started on site on 14th September and are scheduled to take 22 weeks to complete.

The brief to modernise and re-vamp the existing space will see a change in the layout of the ground floor of 1 Harcourt from a traditional, cellular Barristers Chambers into a new reception and meeting room suite for the Chambers of Nigel Wilkinson. Maris were chosen in competition for the works due to their in-depth knowledge of Barristers Chambers and their challenging design concepts.

The scope includes the removal of 4 walls of the ground floor of the 5 storey building and the installation of 2 new lifts. This has produced some challenges due to the tenants living and working in the building while works are on-going. Contractors have strict ‘noise’ periods to minimise disruption to the daily lives of these residents and this has been agreed in close consultation with residents and Chambers alike.

Maris' Project Director commented, "It has been a long but enjoyable process working with 1 Temple and The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple and we are pleased that work is now underway on what is a technically highly complex scheme which will benefit users and visitors to these buildings”.
